I had just the same problem when I first got my Spitfire. I ended up knocking
the cap off and literally destroying it. When you get the replacement caps, you
have two choices. Either weld a nut or epoxy a nut to the inside of the cap.
Something like a 10-24 nut will work just fine. Choose a thinner nut rather
than a thick one as clearance may be close.
Now when you have to remove the cap, use a bolt rather than a screw and you will
have no problems getting the caps off.
