Check the setup of the meter. Perhaps it's set to measure AC volts?
Perhaps one of the leads is in the wrong socket? Perhaps you need a new
multimeter? Otherwise, that's not a car battery.

You measure voltage across the battery terminals, just like you did
before (after correcting problem #1). Should measure just over 12V with
the car off, and 14 to 15 when charging (engine above 2000 RPM or so).

Most likely it's a universal joint. You DO need to find out what it is.
If something snaps back there it will endanger not just the car but its
occupants.

Is the shifter sloppy? If so, a rebush kit might solve your problem (my
Herald was jumping out of Reverse because there was so much slop in the
shifter that I couldn't get it all the way into Reverse, so maybe you
have the same problem). If that's not it then no, there is no easy
(cheap) way to fix.
