Brian,
Ring and pinion come as a matched set. You can't just replace one or the
other without serious risk of chipping a pinion tooth, and we all know
how much that can hurt! When mine went last fall it wedged between the
ring gear and the carrier. No external damage, no gushing oil, but the
carrier came out in 2 pieces, making the diff just as dead.
The way I see it, you have 2 choices. You can rebuild your present diff
(new ring and pinion, new bearings) and buy a used one to serve as a
back cover donor, or you can just buy a used one. I opted to rebuild
mine. That was in October. It's still in the basement...
