Houston, we have a problem

Large quantities of diff oil were trailing behind my 65 Spit.

I put it up on jacks to take a look, and the rear case is split open. 
Is this normal?  How does it still work if there is such a problem
inside as to cause the case to split?  It appears to be split beginning
right behind the ring gear, like something got caught.

Anyone have a Spit diff and case in the SF Bay Area?
