I drove mine daily on the freeway at about 4000 rpm (72mph) for about three
years (45 minutes each way commute). Problems included:
- worn rocker gear and valve guides (yet to be fixed)
- worn UJ's - the vibration caused or contributed to several problems, the
most serious were repeat failures of the generator, top generator mounting
bracket and starter.
- hearing loss due to Monza header and exhaust
- bottom end and compression appear *OK* although I have not looked into it
thoroughly
- water pump
An OD or five speed would be nice - I have the 4.11 ratio which is a little
lower than the later 3.89. I'm currently looking into a five speed
conversion which would be a big improvement. Will post moore info when I
have it.
I think extended runs at 4000-4500 are fine - it was doing it every day
that caused problems for me.

Subject: higher RPM's?
Hi all,
I often see on the list statements about running at higher RPM's being a
no no. So what is higher RPM's? 3,500? 4,000? 4,500? 5,000? 5,500?
Is it model specific? I have an unmodified 1300 71 MKIV. So what RPM
level is safe to maintain for a long period of time?
Thanks in advance for your enlightenment. :)
