Andy,

The Mk III 1300 (1296 cc) is NOT the same as the equivalent Midget 1300
motor (1275cc).

The later Midget 1500 ... IS... the same as basic motor as the Spitfire
1500.  There may be minor differences in which year got which cam/7.5:1 or
9:1 pistons/distributor, etc.

I don't believe that any of the Spitfire motors used valve seals.  If you
have noticable play in the valve stem/guide combination then it's time to
change guides (and possibly valves) pdq.
