Worldly Scions,
I'm contemplating fixing the oil leak(s) in my J-type OD. While I
have reservations about defeating this intrinsic rust-prevention
system; I find the aroma of GL cooking on the exhaust system in
the summer is detracting from my motoring pleasure.
The oil is weeping out at the rear around a couple of the studs
that hold the OD casing together. Only happens when the OD is
engaged. I managed to effect a temporary repair, (eg PO Bodge)
by removing the studs one at at time and forcing some gasket-goo
into the holes. I then replaced the studs and capped things off
with a flat washer under the rear nut. This lasted for about a
year. It seems that the oil should not be in this area in the
first place and a gasket/sealant elsewhere (brake ring?) is the
root cause of the problem.
Having never been into one of these contraptions before, I am
hesitant to take apart a perfectly functioning OD. Can I remove
the rear case without a deluge of internal parts falling out all
over my workbench? Do I risk upsetting any thing else inside.
I do not intend to seperate the OD from the gearbox unit.
Something tells me this is one area where re-assembly is not just
a "straightforward reversal of removal".
Any worldy wisdom would be most appreciated.
adTHANKSvance,
Bob
