Well, shoot, it's easy if one pulls the aluminum cover plate out. It seemed at
first to be pinned in there, but there is actually a
clever slot in the middle-top that allows it to come free. I had to tap the
trans with a rubber mallet while pulling on the plate
to get it out far enough to not obscure the nuts. Once I did that, the nuts
just zipped right off!
