You're quite right, conventional brake fluid will destroy the components in relatively short order. Somewhere, I've got a pair of brand new rear brake cylinders that a previous owner filled with conventional fluid and plugged the opening ... they are totally ruined. But I've had good luck using DOT 5 brake fluid as a long term preservative for brake components.
