You can take off more with coarse grit and then finish with fine. It
will go rather quickly. You won't get uniform thickness with a file,
mostly because there's no good way to hold such a thin piece flat and
square to draw-file it.
But I agree with the poster who suggested using a hardened washer w/o
the tab, if that's easier.
