This is usually happens because a piece of crap fell into
the rack on the calipers and caused the little gear that
spins the dial to basically jump out of time. What you need
to do is stick something small and thin in under the dial
against the rack and get it to jump back to where you want
it. Mitutoyo dial calipers (used to at least) come with a
copper colored tool that was (guessing here) around .015"
thick to do just this. I saved one and keep it in the case
with my Starrett calipers now.
