I'm considering a diesel genset for here in Virginia - not that the power
goes out all that often, but there are a ton of trees around here, and the
ice can get nasty.

I already have a 550 gallon heating oil tank onsite, which, save for some
dye, is filled diesel. I'm not looking to run the whole house on it, I'm
just looking to keep the basics running - no 30KW needed. How simple a
system design could I create to do this? Manual transfer is fine. I do
have gear on UPS, and I'd like the UPS to accept the power it is fed from
the generator...

All questions, no answers! :)
