Take a look at the collar under the blade. These engines have an
"electronic" ignition that
(I think) uses a Hall Effect pickup to time the ignition. This collar
has a magnet in it, and
if it's cracked (the collar) this disrupts the magnetic field to fire
the ignition.
Had this happen on my Tecumsah 6.75hp Craftsman mower.
