I'll be happy to share my experience with you - I did the job last summer.
While I was in there I fixed the defroster door that had stuck shut at every
critical moment since we bought the vehicle, replaced the A/C evaporator
that had obviously been leaking for years (and was so crudded up with leaves
and dust that no air got through the system), replaced the blower motor that
was noisy, and replaced the heater core because it was in my hand and I
didn't want to do the job again. And played Hell finding the foam rubber
pieces necessary for the job (originals were crispy) - finally made most of
them myself.
And had the radio and tape player rebuilt because it was in my hand too and
hadn't been right for years. And pulled the intake manifold because GM just
had to use a quick-disconnect on the heater hose that goes to the manifold,
and it broke as I tried to remove it. The fitting's in a tough position
(actually a very simple position with the conventional hose connection I put
on after getting the QD out), and so I had to pull the manifold to remove
the broken piece. A comedy of errors and certainly some shipwright's
disease, although it's great to have a good radio and AC and working
defrosters and a quiet blower. And be about $1,000 lighter from all the
parts I bought, including the radiator, radio service, Freon-12, etc.
When you're ready to spend a day of fun (or a week if you do it like I did
and have to wait for stuff,etc.) post me and I'll tell you what I learned
and how to do it easier than I did.
