no more than 4 bends in the main hoop. i don't know if you're building to
SCCA rules, but don't forget the lateral at shoulder height, on both sides
of the diagonal. it's there to resist the main hoop folding out and
collapsing in a rollover.

one very excellent trick is to drill 4 holes in the floor where you plan
for the feet of the main hoop and the front braces to drop to the floor.
assemble and weld the cage sitting down 6" so you have plenty of room to
weld over the top properly. cut the tubes so that they project about 1"
through the bottom of the floor, and fabricate the whole thing with the
floor plates in place with holes in them for the feet. once welded at the
top, jack the cage up to sit firmly against roof, and weld the bottoms of
the tubes to the plates. the projecting feet will make handy jack points;
the cage will be in firm physical contact with the roof, but will also be
correctly welded over the tops.

this is how the cage in my SCCA ITB car was done (by Kurt Weiss, who is now
chair of the SCCA competition board.) it is a very strong cage.
