Lots of good replies thus far. I'd like to add that some sort of jig to 
hold your drill bit centered & square would be worth the effort. It 
need not be very elaborate - a hard wood block with a steel bushing 
would work well. You could either clamp it in place or fashion it to 
bolt onto adjacent studs/bolts.
