Bob, the secret to the high temp paints (at least the ones I've used) is
that they have to be heated to cure the paint, somewhat similar to powder
coat.  I used "BBQ" paint on the mild steel exhaust on my TR3 some 15 years
ago, cured it by heating with a propane torch, and it's still in pretty fair
shape.  But of course they don't salt the roads here so definitely YMMV.
