Talk about the "disposable" state of our society also begs me to comment.
This can work in our advantage as well. For instance... Commercial grade
equipment.
Around here, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting another lawn
service truck. What does that mean, LOTS of used/abused commercial
cutting equipment. That needs work.
Most of this stuff is well beyond "consumer grade" junk that is meant to
be thrown away. That means it's worth fixing. I picked up a Hustler (now
Excel) 275 dual-hydrostatic drive mower for a song. I got the whole
works... Trailer, 6' mower deck (2 of them), 6' plow, 6' snowblower, RUPS
cage, and a tons of little parts for it for a song.
7 years later, it's eating up my lawn and asking for more. Basically, it
wouldn't last running 40 hours a week anymore, but to run once a week (or
less) it's fine.
I did this with my John Deere 301N loader/backhoe also. Just recently
(Tues) I bought a John Deere 350B Crawler/loader again for a song. (pics

I'm also looking now at a GMC C7000 dump truck to haul the toys around.
I call it the "Isle of Misfit Tools" syndrome. I look for equipment that
is too big for most homeowners and not reliable enough for the guy that
needs to make a living off of it running 40 hours a week.
So keep fixing the stuff! The old stuff is way better anyway!!!
