Aubrey, I think the point is that it's hard to know in advance if the
cleaners will solve the problem or not. It only costs $20-$30 Cdn and an
hour of your time to find out, and the chemicals will continue to be useful
for continued preservation and maintenance of your top, either the current
one or the new one.
Most ragtop owners find new tops to be expensive and put off buying them as
long as possible. But they do have a limited lifetime, so a new one is
inevitable at some point (unless you sell the car instead).
