My guess is that you can thank the big hardware superstores like Home Depot
and Lowes for this. I bought a Stanley door for my new (vintage 1920) house.
The frame is installed level and plumb, but the door is tight at the top.
The gap is about 1/8". The only way that can happen is if the top of the
frame isn't long enough, or the door is too wide.

A contractor friend was helping me with the kitchen and he commented that
when Home Depot TOLD Stanley how much they would pay for their doors, all the
quality went out the window. Stanley's only choice was either cut corners
(and quality) or not sell to H.D.

Take the door back and demand a good one.
