I have used them on coax (we call them 'toners' around here), but you have
to isolate at least one end, and run the tone down the normally grounded
shield.  Even on phone wire, they have a very limited range, you have to get
the speaker probe within just an inch or two of the wire.  The one I had was
not usable through walls.
