Yeah I know the feeling (well actually my dad does, his house, his
lift). With the top down the convertibles can be lifted all the way up,
just as long as the windshield misses the support beam. I have the highest
position marked on the lift for my car. You have to remember that you need
to lift the car up to get the safety catches to release, so don't put it to
close to the ceiling (don't ask :-). Also don't lift the car too far with
the hood up. Lifts are fun toys, just remember if you hear something funny
sounding while raising or lowering, SOMETHING IS WRONG.
Also don't forget about garage door clearance, there has been plenty of
discussion about this on this list. My dad just got his door rehung so it
is up against the ceiling when open, vs. being in about 8' high before
(just the right height to hit the bumper of the MG and I'm not sure where
it hit his mustang). Only being able to open the door part way with a car
on the lift was such a pain, and destructive until he redid the stops to
only allow the door to open part way (another life experience).
He has a 4 post lift with wheels, it is very nice to be able to move it, I
think it's now in the middle of the garage instead of the side, he's done a
lot or rearranging to get the new suburban in there (how do you make a 3
car garage shrink? Add one suburban).
The lift itself will clear the garage door to go outside, but the bolts
that hold the cables in place stick up several inches and get in the way.
Also not lift related but since you are building remember to put in
oversize doors. The stock width doors (7 foot?) just don't cut it with
trucks. We could not convince my dad's friend to put in oversize door in
his garage (New house). After living there a while he was getting tired of
having to tuck the mirrors in just to pull the truck in. I chuckled. One
day after coming home from the doctor (He does construction and tried to
fly while on a roof, didn't work too well) with a bum foot, he misjudged
the opening and drove into the center post. Wacked the hell out it, funny
how much damage even a slow moving truck will do. I went over to help him
tag it back into position and laughed my A** off. He'll never hear the end
of that. There is now a double door in place of the 2 singles. Live and
Learn.
