What is under the tiles? What are the tiles?
Could you just paint over the tiles? That would be the least allergenic
solution.
We had a loading dock floor at work whose linoleum tiles were cracking.
Someone came in with a special bead blaster and cleaned it down to bare
concrete. It was impressive to watch. The whole area was sealed off
because of the dust created :/
I would remove the glue. A 1911 adhesive is probably breaking down by
now.

I have an old (1911) basement floor with the old 9" tiles. I want to
remove
the tiles and paint the floor. Current advice is to rent a machine to
remove
the old tiles but that still leaves the glue. One suggestion is to just
paint over the glue with a latex epoxy paint. The paint store guy says
the
oil based epoxy paints will react with the glue and cause problems.
Any suggestions? Should I remove the glue? If so, how? I can't afford to
create much of a stink, we have some allergy problems.
