The first number is "number of wheels" In the military, I have driven "6X6"'s and "8X8"s (Hemits) Inch Just a question - I have been working on cars since 1989. Someone posed the question to me last week. What does the first "4" stand for in the term "4x4". I have heard of "4x2" (2 wheel drive) and "4x4" (4 wheel drive). Since the second number is the "number of wheel drive", what does the first number mean? 4 Wheels? 4 Doors? 4 people to wonder what it means?
