Many years ago I visited a Lab in northern Calif. that was experimenting
with Radioactivity. They were also using the radioactive emmission to
accelerate polymer reactions in various materials. One of those materials
was "hard" wood used for flooring. It turned out that if they injected the
polymer under high pressure and heat into the wood -saturating it -then
sending pieces of it through a radioactive Cobalt source they could
accelerate the linking of the polymer.
The result was a wood floor that was "rubbery" but, nearly impossible to
scratch. It was quite interesting. They also took some of this
manufactured "wood" product and made golf clubs faces......
