My wife bought one of those things when we discovered that one or more
chipmunks had taken up residence in the garage behind a cabinet that was too
heavily laden with tools to think about moving or emptying. The rascals had
to go right by the device to get to their lair. Did it discourage them? Not
a bit.
Still trying to be humane I bought a live trap and caught one in the first 5
minuets it was out. Being the compassionate sole that I am, I even drove the
little creature a mile or so away, and released him on the other side of a
nice sized river to keep him from coming back. Later, discovering that I
still had chipmunks in the garage, I reset the live trap. However, I have
yet to catch another one. Figuring that probably the first one peed in the
trap and left a signal for his buddies I washed the thoroughly with soap and
hot water. I reset it and still no luck, though I would always find it
tripped. For a while I thought maybe it was just tripping itself since the
mechanism is pretty sensitive, but when I noticed that it was always tripped
within an hour or so of being set out I decided to get the answer to what
was going on.
I set the trap up in its usual place and then stationed myself 50 or so feet
outside the garage in a chair with a magazine to read. In less than 15
minutes I had my answer. The little *!@%*(*#s would run by the trap and bang
the mechanism on the side intentionally setting it off. At that point I
decided if they were that damned smart I'd learn to share the garage with
them. Now if I could just train them to fetch me something when I drop it
under the car I'd feel they were paying their rent!
