Funny you should ask, I just finished my second traffic light project. I
have a source for actual DOT traffic lights (they are BIG and are not
really cheap) But I wired 2 of them up in my garage to work as parking
indicators. The way it works is this...
When the garage door starts opening, the light comes on red.
When the door opens pass height of the car, it turns green. (using a reed
switch on the door)
When I get about 2 feet from where I want to stop, it turns yellow. (using
a radio shack light beam switch.)
Then, when I am where I need to stop, it turns red again. (another light
beam)
I've wired each side of the garage with this. The first time I used 4x
double pole relays. This second time I only needed 2 relays.
I want to put the parts list and schematic on the web, but I don't have a
program that makes schematics. (the Radio Shack parts cost about $90 then
you can make your own traffic light.)
Does anyone have a freeware program to make schematics?
Now for your question, how do you want the lights to operate? Do you just
want them to flash in sequence at timed intervals? Or do you want it to go
Green, yellow, red, green at different times? Either way, the circuit is
pretty easy. LMK and I'll draw one up.

Traffic Light Electrical Circuit
Hello Listers (or should say BOO!! tonight),
I have obtained a traffic light, actually one of the small european types,
and would like to use it as a display in the family room. Can anyone out
there help me with a schematic that would allow the lights to flash in
sequence. I know I can use separate timer relays and adjust each light so
they turn on and off in what looks like the correct sequence but I was
hoping for a circuit that would sequence each light in order. I have to
rewire the lights from the original sockets so I can use 110V or even 12v
for the supply. I'll appreciate any suggestions I can get.
