q: HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO REBUILD A H2 or almost any other part of the
LBC's?
LBC's especially the cheaper ones were made of simple bits and olde
technology. as a result almost anyone who could afford a car was smart enough
to maintain it. The Brits also made good books telling you how to do it The
BMC special tuning manual cost 2S 6p as I recall. Rarely do you need special
tools although it sometimes helps. One other benefit they were in English!!!
(How can you work on a car that doesn't understand you?)
SU carbs are simplicity personified-- there's hardly anything to them!! about
the only thing a "rebuild" means is to remove the needle seat and a few
gaskets and washers replace them and re-assemble it!!! If it will adjust to
the correct mixture and the bowel doesn't drool gas it probably doesn't need
rebuilding.
(A) make sure the float is set right
(B) see if it will adjust too lean at idle
(C) if your idle varies significantly try lifting and depressing the throttle
shaft. If it is loose and changes the idle a lot you will want to replace the
shaft. on a TD you'll probably need an oversize shaft and a reamer or
possibly even need to press in bushings
(D) check the needle is it the right one? (see the SU needle book) is it
work?
(E) clean the dash pot and look for wear where it might not fit just right
(F) you can get by for years by just lowering the float level to comphensate
for jet seal wear --do a plug check when in doubt!!
