Actually, there is another option - you can have the house wired for 400 amp
service, and run the 200 amp garage service from this. The installation cost
for a 400 amp service is much higher than 200 amp, but not much higher than
two 200 amp services, if any, and you would avoid paying two monthly bills.
Plus, you could hide the cost from your wife!
