My Century MIG welder is one of the best investments I have ever made.
Get the gas, not only are welds perfectly clean, there is almost no
smoke generated. If you weld inside with the flux core wire the air can
get pretty thick and possibly toxic. I second the recommendation for
automatic liquid crystal hoods, they make working much easier,
especially in cramped quarters. With inert gas and one of these hoods
the amateur has a chance of making excellent welds with only a little
practice.
There are also some good videos out there for training-some supplied by
the manufacturers and others are available from Classic Motorbooks and
Eastwood. Have fun, and remember, never weld near the fuel tank or fuel
lines! Drain and remove the tank if necessary and always keep a good
quality fire extinguisher nearby.
