When I wired my garage, it got its own breaker box. If you look inside
one, you'll see that the "hot" legs go to alternate breakers. You can get
breakers for 220V which are double thickness, switching both legs. Or, if
you wire your compressor from two neighboring breakers, you can get a metal
handle which switches both breakers together. It is possible to get two-
pole single throw (2PST) wall switches, but I'm not sure how common they are
in the higher capacities. Real "motor switches" should be available at any
electrical supplier, they're rated by both amps and horsepower and are the
most appropriate (and legal?) solution.
