Firstly, Haynes manuals. I've taken a look at my local car-DIY place
and they don't stock Shadow ones. Over Easter, I will be going in to my
nearest large town and can check at a larger place. If they don't stock
them, I can find out what the ISBN is. Armed with this info, you can
probably order them via Amazon.com or somewhere similar.
They may be out of print. This is not necessarily a disaster, as Haynes
manuals frequently turn up at jumble sales and village fetes. This way,
it will be even cheaper, but you might have to put up with some oily
fingerprints and scribbled notes in the margin. Anyone stateside who is
interested, please shout, and I'll keep an eye out. Trouble is, I don't
live in the kind of area where many people own RR's so it could be a
while before I unearth any. List-members in the Home Counties might
like to keep an eye out too, as you are likely to come across them
sooner than me.
I have a vague recollection that there are two different manuals - early
Shadow and late - so when shouting, please state the year and chassis no
of your vehicle.
Secondly, workshop manuals. The RREC offer:
TSD 2206 Gearbox Manual 4-speed automatic for Shadow and T - £ 46.00
TSD 2476 Workshop Manual Silver Shadow, covers up to chassis number
30,000 (5 volumes) - £ 270.00
TSD 4200 Workshop Manuals - Silver Shadow II, TII - £ 285.00
This is a bit cheaper than the $ 700 you were quoted unless those were
Can$.
If you join the RREC, you get a 'Consolidated Bulletin Index' of all
technical articles ever published. These are collected in four
volumes, each £ 14. Most of the Shadow articles seem to be in vol 4,
and one that might be of particular interest is "Shadow brakes -
overhaul including handbrake" - in Technical Manual volume 4. For
articles since volume 4 was published, they give the issue number of the
bulletin in which the article originally appeared.
All the above information and much beside is accessible from the RREC
website, http://www.rrec.co.uk. Like the build state of your particular
vehicle, microfilmed drawings galore....
Finally, why not make your enquiries direct to Emma? (Emma runs the
Club shop) - she's very helpful. Her contact details are on the
website. Don't be shy.

Rover Cowley! RREC Oxford (Founder's) Section went for a guided tour
there recently - just before I joined. The occasion, 21 November 1997,
was "the 50th anniversary of PSF (now Rover)'s connection with the
production of Rolls-Royce car bodies". If anyone wants me to copy this
article posted here, please shout.
It seems that a Continental R's floor pan is made of 25 parts, compared
with a Rover 600 series's one. (As it happens, my 'other' car is a
Rover 600 and I can confirm that if someone drives into the back of it
the floorpan ripples nicely.)
Happy brake-dismantling, gearbox-dropping, etc. I thought RR's never
'failed to proceed'?
