No definitive answer. My Master Parts Book only shows the tailgate
picture of the fiberglass cover on the 'burb.

Did you ever get any answers to this question?
I always thought the 'fancy' GMC was 55 - 59 and then block letters
after that.
When I restored my truck I ended up going with a flat panel tailgate and
then just installing a decal with the 'fancy' GMC.
I checked the sales catalog where I bought my decal and they list 55 -
59 as being the same.

I believe that 55.2 and 56 GMC trucks had block letters GMC on the
tailgate.
In 57 the tailgate letters were fancier. The M had a little horizontal
"bar" off of the bottom of each leg that underlined the G and the C
similar to the GMC logos on the hood and front fenders.
Anyone out there know what years (55.2 through 66) used the block
letters and which had the fancy letters on the tailgate?
