I've begun driving my 53 3100 an have a couple of questions for the group.
First, My steering seems a little twitchy. I've replaced everything in
the straight axle front end (kingpins, bushings, tie rod ends, drag link
ends). The steering box has new bushings and is adjusted for no play at
center. I still have the ball bearings in the spindles. I'm running
255-70-15 tires. The truck seems a little unstable at 50+. It seems to
have about 2" of free play in the steering wheel while driving at speed,
but while parked I can't detect any play. You can see the wheels move
with about 1" of steering wheel movement. Where should I focus?
Anti-sway bar? Roller bearings?
Second, carburetors. I have a Rochester B on a 62-era 235. It is a
little leaky so I just bought another one. I was very surprised to find
that the new one had a larger bore and bolt spacing than the one on my
235. I can't remember the bore, but the bolt spacing is 2 15/16.
What gives? Have I got the carb and manifold for a 216 on my engine? Or
is my new carb for a 261?
Advice and / or commentaary are welcomed.
regards,
Leon
