Bob can you clarify your description please.
The original '49 should not fit a 283. Do you mean an original 283 type
bellhousing bolted to the stock transmission? Is/was your truck set up with
a saddle tube for motor side mounts, and a transmission mount crossmember at
the rear of the transmission?
What kind of rear is in your truck?

When I first purchased our 49 3100 (1/2ton) it came with a 283 bolted to
the original bell housing attached to the original
4-speed tranny. The previous owner used the common after market tube
saddle for side mounts on the engine and of
course the rear (trans) was stock mounted to the cross member but not
the bell housing.
