Is there anyway you could change the gears in the original and keep the
3:90? I am thinking of keeping the original in my 55 2nd, but i would like a
smaller or taller gear, not sure what it would be, maybe a 3:08.
I was hoping i could get a 3:08 gear and maybe 5 lug axels, but not sure
that is possible. I am not even sure the rear i have is original, i can't
find the ID numbers on the tube.
Anyway, let us know how it works out for you.

Got out and took the cover off the rearend.. I'm not gonna worry about
attempting to rebuilt as I have a replacement already. Looks like the
pinion bearing came apart as you can grab the ring gear and watch the
pinion actually move up/down about 1/2 inch, not to mention all the
shaving, chunks found in the bottom of housing. In the first photo you can
see all the particles that the oil has distributed and part of what looks
like the retaining ring that should be encased in the bearing and can we
say shavings - broken teeth on the gears???.. Here they
are-enjoy... --wayne
p.s. Joe-once again your assessment was right on the money!!!!
