When I was working around Cheyenne, mid '80's I saw several "smokers"
installed in Pickups and Subs. The Cowboys around WY & CO use them to pull
their horse trailers around the country to attend rodeos. You are on the
right track with your GMC stuff, as the nicest on I saw was a 1ton GMC with
a standard box with a wood floor, which the guy said came from the factory,
but he used the larger truck cab, hood and stuff. the truck was an early
'70's and the engine was an 8-71 Detroit. He said he could run 80 mph up
hill down hill all day long fully loaded.
