A word of caution when converting to an alternator. The typical alternator
puts out twice as many amps (or more) than the stock generator. The stock
gauge cannot handle the extra amps or will handle it until failure of the
gauge. I speak from experience; my 59 3800 handles the old 45 amp alternator
just fine and has for years. But my 58 3100 let the smoke out of the wiring
harness when the gauge failed with a 80 amp alternator. To be on the safe
side run 2 #10 wires from the alternator directly to the battery. It might
save you some headaches down the road.
