Special order colors are not new. We build commercial trucks all the time
with special colors. I was told you have to order at least five trucks to
get the colors, I don't know. We had conversion places in 90's getting some
pretty wild colors. I wrote some down for my projects.
On the "looking out for my car" part. When GM workers ordered one, they
always knew and left special notes on for the lines to do "better" like you
said. In the old truck plant in Janesville, lot's of options not really
ordered on truck just "happened" to fall on it somehow!! GM finally nailed
some fellas, some got fired, but Union got them back for doing that. GM knew
it happened, just took awhile before they acted on it. NOW, with puter's and
line speed so fast, pretty hard to put on anything "extra"!
Yeah, I see tons of damaged or NON-conforming metals, and interiors and
anything else go out the door at plant. They usually crush big metals with
fork truck before putting in bins. Lots of neat,still "usuable" stuff goes
to recyclers. We had AGV robots on line when it first opened. They had lots
of trouble withthem. They put in a chain for motorline after 8yrs, and as
the robots came off the end of line, they removed the engine from it and
battery's and rest went into dumpsters with fork trucks. Man, would have
loved to have one to roll engines around in shop or at least just the
mounting cradle! They junked all the good heavy iron benches from the same
line. They were nice, shelves and all. Everyone tried to get one of those.
But NO, recylcler Pays $ for them. Yeah, right!
