John:
Replaced the vacuum motor in my '56 last year with one purchased from Chevy
Duty for approx. $140.00. Electric motor is made by Newport Enginnering
(many vendors use Newport, some charge more than Chevy Duty for the same
unit). Motor comes with good instructions and is prewired to a replacement
switch for the original location on the dash. Only downside is the switch
won't accept the original knob without some slight modifications.
My installation went smoothly because I don't have a dash-mounted radio
therefore lots of room to work under the dash. Two most important things
are a good ground (run a separate wire to a section of the cab with bare
metal and make sure your cab is well grounded to the frame and engine).
Second is follow adjustment directions closely to assure motor is adjusted
for the 'stop' and 'park' positions or you will have trouble with the motor
refusing to start/stop or the wiper arms not returning the the bottom of the
windshield when turned off. I called Newport's customer service line only
once and got the information I needed from knowledgeable people. I've been
pleased with the results so far.
Good luck!!
