The 9"Ford rear ends allow you to change ratios much easier than the Chevy
rear ends. It's what the NASCAR boys use. With the Chevy's it's easier just
to remove the whole rear end when changing gear ratios while the Ford 9"
allows you to unbolt the carrier or "guts" without removing the whole third
member. I'm not sure what all Fords have the 9" but I do know that the later
70's Lincoln Continentals have them complete with rear disk brakes. I
believe the Versailles and possibly the Mercury Marquis and Ford Grenada may
also have them but not sure on that.
The 8" I dont have any experience with at all but I think they used them
under all the Ford trucks back in the late 60's and through the 70's. I've
pondered myself on whether you could get good results with the 8" as I
expect they are much more plentiful.
As to 9" vs 8" I believe that refers to the diameter of the ring gear but I
am sure I will corrected if I'm wrong. :)

Subject: [oletrucks] 9" rear end
Since I got no response from the previous question, maybe someone could
comment on why people use 9" rear ends on their street rods. What are the
advantages? And what donor vehicles are good ones for the 9" rear ends?
The guy helping me with my truck is ready to install the rear end and has
recommended an 8" but I really don't understand the difference.
Thanks.
