I too have a 57 GMC and I painted the wheel without sandblasting. Chevy Duty
here in Kansas City has an inexpensive crack filler that I used to fill
small cracks in the wheel. It's easy to use but requires a lot of sanding if
you apply too much. After the cracks were filled and sanded smooth I sanded
the entire wheel and applied several coats of a good primer than several
coats of the color coat. Shines real nice and looks good. Seems to me that
sandblasting would pit the surface and therefore require more coats of
primer. I applied the color coat of the exterior but I am unclear if that is
actual spec.

Hi Jim :
I agree that it gets noisy but we camped of of the back side in a smaller
area just outside the fenced in grounds with some nice quiet people! I think
we asked at the info center and the told us about the area and the roudy
area in side.
I heard the comment about sunday being a bust from several people.
I might suggest to people who aren't in to the party scene to go because it
is good show on Fri/Sat. and if camping ask for directions to a "family"
area.

Getting ready to replace my stock AD steering ball studs and tie rod for
newer tie rod and tie rod ends to achieve wheel clearance. I remember
seeing a process for removing the ball studs on original AD truck spindle
steering arms to replace with newer tie rod end types. Now I'm ready, I
can't find the article; not even in the shop manual. I believe one starts
by grinding, or drilling, the flat side of the ball stud and then beat the
stud out. Can anyone give me some advice on this? Thanks in advance.

I did it with the balls on the pitman arm & steering knuckle for the drag
link. You will need to remove assemblies from the truck. Grind down the
back side some & then put on an H-press to push out (guy told me it took
about 12 tons to press out, even with most of flange ground away). Then,
just bolt in the replacements; make sure they are tight.

I took a 52 chevey gril apart. Chevey duty has a kit to put it back to
gether. Steel pop rivits is ok. Alum ones are not will break in about 25K
New Mexico miles or less. The kit is really the way to go. $14.00 is all.
Make sure it all fits together first, rivits are a bear to get out. biger
on the bottom smaller on the top. Good luck, it aint that bad

Two questions:
(1) Can I safely sandblast the wheel without damage, I'm not sure if its
metal or some type of material that the sand might damage?
(2) Steering wheels were originally painted the color of the truck, right?
Any advice appreciated.
