[oletrucks] Can I sandblast my steering wheel???

Hi Team:
I've got a 57 GMC 1/2 ton and I'm ready to paint the steering wheel.  

Two questions:
(1) Can I safely sandblast the wheel without damage, I'm not sure if its 
metal or some type of material that the sand might damage?
(2)  Steering wheels were originally painted the color of the truck, right?
Any advice appreciated.
