Thanks to everyone who has offered advice so far. The only number that I
have found on the engine so far is 14037053. Underneath it are the letters
GMCFM. The number was on the top of the engine beneath the air cleaner
behind the carb. After searching the web, the only number that I can find
that is close is 140570053, which I think identifies the intake manifold.
That doesn't help me because it listed that intake manifold for a 305 or 350
engine with a QuadraJet carb, which I already knew. As for the transmission,
in addition to the seller telling me that it was a 700R4, I got that
information from this web site: http://www.f-body.org/tech/tech.htm.
According to the site, the 700R4 was the only automatic transmission
available in 1983 Camaros. That site is also why I believe that the car has
a 305 engine. The only way that it wouldn't is if it was replaced at some
point. I guess I'll take another look for correct casting number.
