Throttle cables to short
Here is an easy way to repair a throttle cable that is too short. Pull the
dash knob with cable out of the housing. You will find that the dash knob
portion is about 3" long then there is a single strand cable sticking out of
the end of it. To fix the too short problem cut the end of the shaft, with
the cable in it, off about 1/2" from the end of the shaft. If you have a
drill press and vice mount the shaft, with the knob on it, in the vice so
that the end you just cut off is exposed. Measure the size of the cable
that you are going to use, approximately 1/16", chuck up the appropriate
sized drill and drill a hole approximately 1/2" deep into the end of the
knob shaft. Take time to get the hole centered in the end of the shaft. To
secure the cable into the shaft obtain some low temp. Silver Solder, insert
the cable into the end of the shaft the full 1/2" , heat the shaft with an
appropriate torch and silver solder the cable into place.
This is how I repaired mine and it has worked problem free for approximately
6 years now.
Hope this helps and it can obviously be used to repair broken choke cables
as well as the heat/defrost cable. Believe me it works like a charm and
saves looking for a replacement knob with cable. The loose cable can be
purchased in lengths from most autoparts or small engine shops.
