In 55.2 thru 59 GM trucks two OPTIONAL heaters were offered.
The recirculating heater used only in-cab air. It had a
rheostat to control fan speed. There was no control of how
much water went through the heater core. The deluxe heater
(also known as the fresh air heater) could use cab air,
outside air or a mix of the two. The controls for the deluxe
heater consisted of four levers, Temp, Outside Air, Defrost
and a 4 position switch lever for the fan speed. There were
also a number of after market heaters available. Most (all?)
were similar in operation to the recirculating heater.
By the way, welcome to the list Curt.

Subject: [oletrucks] 1955 2nd series heater
I'm having an awful time getting on this list!!! This is the fourth
time I've written this, so I hope I'm on now. My 55 has what appears to
be an aftermarket heater in it. Someone has put a "switch" through the
plate that, I believe, was suppose to have the heater controls located
in it. My question is: Did all 55 models come with standard
heating/defrosting, or was this an option? It doesn't appear that my
truck ever had any "in dash" heater controls??? Any help greatly
appreciatd. Thanks Curt Morris
