Steve:
Yes, that usually works but some of the early 235s may have had
the old style valve covers too. Also people (like me) put the old
valve covers on them to disquise them as a 216. Probably a better
way is to look at the push rod cover. If the sheet metal cover
comes up and over the spark plugs, it's a 216. If it doesn't, it's a
235 (although people have been know to use this disquise as well).
