Eric mentioned that he had a problem with stock wheels and disk brakes.
This is a real problem. When disk brakes were introduced in the 1960s
and 70s, they had to redesign the wheels to clear the calipers. When I
worked at a junkyard about 1980, this was a big concern, and we made
sure to ask customers if they had disk brakes before we sold them a
wheel...and of course, we charged extra for "disk brake wheels".

It's easy to see the difference: if it's an old drum brake wheel, the
rim center will drop near the inner edge of the rim, but if it's a disk
brake wheel, the rim will be full diameter on the inner side, about
halfway across the width of the rim.

I don't know of any disk brake type wheels that will work with the stock
clip type hubcaps.

It may be possible to have the wheels rebuilt with later rims on the
original centers. If there's a wheel shop in a big city near you, this
may be worth looking into.
