I have to second this comment. On a hot, Kentucky day, the air flow through
the cowl vent is almost as good as AC. I took my cowl vent out (fairly easy
job) cleaned and lubed everything and then replaced the rubber seal. I get
no leaks and the vent operates very smoothly. My current truck is a 53 so I
don't have the side vent, but years ago I had a 49 and loved the side vent
for the same reasons.
