On my 57 I6 235, the pump should be turned clockwise when looking down at
the pump.  This is a gear pump.  Turning backwards won't hurt anything but
won't pump any oil either.

Just for reference, my book says for the V8 it's the same thing.  Don't
know about the GMC.
